INTRODUCTION:

boltBOLT GROUP 3D is a software tool to calculate shear and tensile forces for each fastener in riveted or bolted joints. The method is valid only for components that are sufficiently stiff in the joint area. For the static strength analyses the centroid of the fastener group is determined taking into account the allowable forces of the fasteners

  • Validation: A load check is done as validation of input/output data

INPUTS:

Input data required for the analysis is:

  • Properties of Riveting: This information has to be filled for each type of rivet (or fastener) that appears in the Bolt Group distribution.
    1. Name of the rivet: internal name use in the Excel Sheet.
    2. Allowables: shear, tension rivet and tension nut allowables.
  • Position, type and effectiveness: complete one row for each rivet or fastener (50 rivets maximum):
    1. Rivet number: from 1 to the number of rivets.
    2. Rivet Type: same name as appears in 1.
    3. Coordinates: position of the rivet. The excel sheet supports only rivets that are located in the xy plane with z-coordinate = 0.0 and the z-axis as tension axis.
    4. Effectiveness (Yes/No): user has to consider if the rivet admits shear and tension.
  • Applied Loads:
    1. Application Point: position where the load is defined
    2. Load: force and moment components.

OUTPUTS:

When the parameters are filled, BOLT GROUP 3D tool automatically calculates loads per rivet, and graphical distribution of bolts and loads is shown when pressing button “Refresh Graphs”. A simple check can be done comparing Load Check cells with the Input Load to know if the results fulfil balance of forces and moments.
